The traditional methods of removing plaque and tartar from the periodontal pockets are not a particularly pleasant experience. It involves the use of hand held instruments to remove these substances, and the efficiency of the procedure is somewhat limited in that it does not remove the bio film which houses the bacteria.
Techniques currently available include more advanced technology for modern dentistry, include micro-ultrasonic devices and lasers. The combined effect of such technologies completely eliminates the oral infections and cures the disease.
How does Laser Treatment Work?
- A diode type laser along with a ultrasonic device removes the biofilm from the surface of the tooth.
- Following the removal of the biofilm, the laser sterilizes the periodontal pocket and removes the unhealthy gum tissue.
- When the unhealthy tissue is taken out, tiny blood clots form and the usual body responses react, the healthy tissue re attaches to the bone, and the gums return to a healthy state.
Is There any Pain with Laser Treatment?
Pain is minimal with laser treatment. The laser is specifically tuned with respect to its operating wavelength and power output to destroy unhealthy periodontium tissue only. It does not affect any other mouth part.
Often a local anesthetic is given to numb the gum prior to surgery, and a vitamin E based ointment is spread on the gum to soothe and promote healing.
Is Laser Surgery Expensive?
Since the laser treatment eliminates all oral infection, the likelihood of repeat periodontal disease, and subsequent repeat treatment is low. On this basis, laser therapy is more cost efficient than traditional treatments.
Usually it is possible to negotiate a reasonable price with periodentists who carry out laser surgery, and very often payment plans are available.
Laser surgery for the treatment of periodontitis is only now becoming a recognized form of treatment, and not every dental practice can offer such treatment.
Also, an increasing number of dental hygienists are being trained in the utilization of laser surgery to put their skills into practice, which have traditionally been underused.
Because the laser treatment is so effective and causes no discomfort to the patient, and is associated with an almost non existent recovery time, it is anticipated that in the near future, laser treatment will become standard for the treatment of periodontal disease.
